This was a song I learnt from the Kodaly workshop that I attended. They suggested that the children do actions on rests to mark the silent beat. When I taught the kids, I realised that they had difficulty doing it on the silent beat, so I compromised and told them that they could make the sound "shh" to remind themselves that it was supposed to be silent.
Next, I got the students to notate the rhythms on the board, since they'd learnt crotchets and quavers the year before.
Students learnt to draw the crotchet rest. I told them it was like 3 strokes of lightning and a C at the bottom.
Lastly, students practice reading and playing with the recorder scores with rests in them.
